Welcome to SportsBoat.co.uk
Monday mornings don’t normally start off with someone phoning and begging you take an expense paid trip to Italy the next day, where on a gloriously Italian lake you are given the chance to muck around on one of Sea Ray’s newest boat – but hey, some Mondays are just better than others.
As if the sea wasn’t appealing enough, it turns out there is an entire watery realm of worldly proportion hiding underneath our hulls. What’s more, as well as being blessed with some spectacular wildlife and geological formations around our shores, thanks to our illustrious history of being competent seaman who sank anything that looked vaguely valuable or foreign, the UK has the largest amount of shipwrecks doting its coast than any other nation.
Formula is one of those iconic brands of the powerboating world that harks back to the era of the Magnum, Cigarette and Donzi boats, the craft designed and built by the legendary Don Aronow. The early Aronow Formula boats followed his signature of deep vee hulls with a relatively narrow beam that cut through seas like a surgeon making the first incision.
Once upon a time, the RIB was a very predictable creature. If it was at all worthy of the name, it would involve a heavily built hull wrapped in a vast collar, with some jockey seats, some open deck space and some serious seagoing credentials. We all knew what to expect and we were unaccustomed to disappointment.
Picture the scene: you’re deep sea fishing with a few mates. You’re miles from land, away from the shipping lanes and the inevitably named ‘Dave’ decides to cook up a storm of instant noodles to counteract the beer he was drinking. Being Dave, he gets distracted, the stove goes over setting the craft alight. One thing leads to another and you find yourself needing to abandon ship. What do you do next?
