Sports Boat and RIB's Blog

What follows is a diary of thoughts and events that may or may not be related to boats (and may or may not be based in fact).

I have the power

I've just got back from a five-day music festival, where I spent the entire time living out of the back of a van. And, while that's fine for a slightly feral man like me, the need for hair straighteners and the like creates a bit of a problem for some people who like to remain better presented (my missus).

It is on this note that I wish to thank Honda for an astonishing piece of equipment in the form of their latest 2kw generator, the EU20i. It is small, light, very compact and by far the quietest gennie I have ever used. It's also full of clever technology that will apparently allow me to run more sensitive equipment than hair straighteners. That is all to come, when I relocate my mobile magazine-producing office into the back of the van but for now, let me just pledge my heartfelt gratitude to Honda for making me not just the man with the power to activate my good lady's grooming equipment - but the man who became uncommonly popular with everyone else's girlfriends too.

All hail the magical Honda EU20i . . .

The Dangers of Powerboating

It was really shocking to see the video of Shelley Jory's recent powerboating accident which saw Shelley and her throttleman Patrick Huybreghts hospitalised. The accident happened in Sardinia during rounds 5 & 6 of the World Powerboat Grand Prix. It's a reminder of how dangerous powerboating can be, even for the professionals and highly experienced. Luckily Shelley and Patrick followed all the necessary safety procedures and so now recovering from their ordeals. Whether Shelley returns to competitive powerboating remains to be seen, but we wish her a speedy recovery and hope to see her back on the water soon.

Boat Tips: Check the Oil!

(1 vote, average 1.00 out of 5)

This Boat Tip comes from the Power Boating for Dummies book written by Randy Vance, Editor-in-chief of Boating Magazine.  As a life-long boater himself, Vance recommends checking the oil on your boat's engine each time you go boating.  Sound excessive?  It's not.  The Coast Guard does a thorough check of their boats each day, including running the engines and checking the oil along with a multitude of other tests and gear checks to be sure they are "Semper Paratus" - always ready. You should do the same by checking the oil and replenishing it, if necessary, every time you boat.

Blog at YachtPals.com - The Online Boating Community

I know it has been awhile since my last Blog posting so I thought I would put something together to give you an idea what I will be enjoying down here in a couple of months. Things have been slow here, which is great. I spent a couple of days in San Salvador and enjoyed exploring the city in locations where I have not visited before. There are 4 shopping malls and as you walk through and see the shops and restaurants you would think you are visiting an expensive mall in America.
