Regal 2250 Cuddy - Permateek Decking.

Postby Centaur » Fri Jul 13, 2012 1:34 am

Well, we've finally had two dry days strung together (although it did rain early on day 1 and late on day 2!) and so I've been able to get my new Permateek decking fitted. It was supplied and fitted by Darren Lunn of Decking Inspirations and I'm very impressed with the results.

The Regal is not a big boat but the cockpit and swim platform required lots of separate small teak panels. This was time consuming but Darren was very conscientious and was prepared to put in as much time as the job required. He has a good eye for detail too and finished the job to a very high standard.

I got quotes for several different brands of teak finish and more than one quote for each brand. However, I was disappointed with the response from a number of the suppliers - they often failed to properly address my questions and gave me the impression that they weren’t listening to what I wanted. It didn’t fill me with confidence and some of the quotes were astronomic too.

By contrast, Darren was always quick to answer e-mail correspondence and came across well on the telephone. He answered all my questions fully, offered helpful suggestions of his own and gave me the impression that he enjoyed, and was good at, his work.

Permateek is available in several colours but I went for the lighter ‘Permateek Modern’ with the ‘Ivory’ caulking, rather than the usual black, as this seemed to best suit the interior and upholstery of my boat. Also, I went for a borderless finish – this is slightly cheaper as it requires less work but I primarily went for this as the number of small panels would have made a bordered finish look far too fussy.

Anyway, enough of the chat – here are the photos of the finished article:

(Note: The teak looks rather darker on the photos than in reality – it’s actually more like freshly sawn teak. The upholstery is much more creamy too, not grey as it appears on some of the photos. I will see if I can fiddle with the colour balance on the camera!)

Have to say that looks great, the lighter caulking really goes with the boat he's done a great job there very smart. Just out of interest does it come with any guarantee?

Matt, I'm not sure about the warranty. I did ask the various suppliers when I got the quotes but can't remember the specific terms of the Permateek warranty. However, I had Permateek fitted to a swim platform a few years ago, so I'm not so much worried about the product as the way it is fitted. The product was pretty durable and seemed to shake off most knocks and spills but, if incorrectly fitted or fitted in the wrong conditions, there is a chance that some areas might not bond correctly. Having had pretty good conditions on the day, I am confident that it should be okay.

Ian H, the swim platform was just the usual non-skid surfacing and the cockpit was fitted with a good quality rubber-backed marine carpet. However, I use my boat primarily for watersports and neither are ideal. The swim platform was grippy enough for shoes or bare feet but couldn't keep hold of skis or wakeboards. Trying to climb into a pair of wakeboard bindings on a slippery platform is a pain... The carpet would get quite wet during a day with people walking back and forth in wetsuits and would take ages to dry out, especially when the boat was left with the covers on. The humidity under the covers would therefore remain very high and nothing else would dry very well either. The alternative is to take the carpets out but the non-skid surface is not great on the feet and terrible on the knees! The teak decking solves both problems as it is grippy for wakeboards etc, dries very fast (quicker even than the original non-skid GRP decking) and is kind on the feet and knees.

This is what it looked like before:

Excellent job Centaur. I bet you are really chuffed to bits. Really sets the boat off looking good.

Do you have an idea of the cost and square metreage?
