I usually launch at Conwy, but do trail the boat down to Pwllheli a couple of times a year for a change of scenery, usually when the sea's calm. Had a good day out from there back in june when there was a spell of high pressure. Aiming to make it again before the end of the season, given some favourable weather.

Hi there, No it's not only you that cruises out of Pwllheli, We come out of Pwllheli and have had some good trips this year. Quite often just go out in the Aberech bay and do some towing but do go to Black Rock and Porthmadog, also go down to Abersoch, round the islands and round to Porth Cariad.
Any ideas for any trips?
Have seen loads of Dolphins this year.

yeah another boater from Pwllheli!

Sounds like you go to the usual places then, have you been to Bardsey or Barmouth yet? I have been a few times before, but not on my own always in company. Bardsey is not the sort of place you venture to on you own, break down there and its a long row home or you end up in Ireland. Barmouth is a good run straight across the bay, bit eery wathcing the coast dip below the horizon with just the tops of Snowdonia for company. Tie up at the harbour wall and grab some fish and chips.
Are you on park and launch or do you do it yourself?

Hi All

New to this site and to boating - just bought Searay 185 and very excited

Using Westcoast Park & Launch in Pwllheli and wonder how tide dependant is the marina there?

I hear the channel is dredged below CD and from the charts it looks like there is always sufficient depth to enter and exit the marina - is this right - can anyone help?

Also any hints and tips for trips down to Llanbedrog / Abersoch?

Thank you very much for any help or ideas here

The marina channel should have about 1m at low springs, was silting up a lot last year with the heavy rain early in the year driving muck down the rivers feeding the harbour. However they did a lot of dredging last year so the channel should be a bit deeper this year. In terms of coming out of the inner harbour towards the outer harbour - opposite the Harbour Masters office - you need to be on the harbour Masters side where it is deeper. At the bottom of a big spring, trim your leg up and you should be ok. The harbour motuh narrowed a lot last year as the sand spit from the Gimblet Rock side spread out, the tide does sluice through there now, its a bit narrow and you can get standing waves in there which looks daunting, but just plough on and as soon as you get outside the harbour mouth it eases off very quickly.

Check out the marina website www.hafanpwllheli.co.uk for details of the marina itself, and dont forget to pick up a marina handbook with the local tide table in it, collect one from the marina office.

In terms of the local bays, as you come out of Pwllheli there is a row of yellow bouys markign the bathing area - pick up the leaflet from the marina office which shows what they all mean, otherwise you may get your collar felt by the local authority beach patrol boat.
Llanbedrog has a drain pipe for surface water sticking a long way out, I would suggest talking a walk on the beach at low tide to find it and check the Admiralty chart, i know one or two people who have hit it and its not pretty to see a leg hanging on by the shift cable!
Abersoch gets very very busy at peak times, lots of yachts and otehr boats - I try and avoid it as its just not fun. More than happy to meet up and talk you through the local charts for good places to go and areas to avoid.
What are you planning to do on the water, cruise, ski, donut, fish or just laze around and enjoy being afloat?

regards

Been out a few times already this year, infact this week has been good and the Easter weekend looks promising. I use parl and launch, am with Llyn Marine, second season with them, always a quick and friendly service. Kids have been in the sea already. Only been out in Aberech bay up to now with the odd time round to what I call Butlins bay which is the little bay after the first headland heading towards Criccieth.

If you still call it Butlins then your giving away how long you've been boating there then!
Were you the boat huiring round on sun afternoon with silent thunder turned off then? Someone was having a great time off Abererch beach. Where do you usually go and what do you get up too?
