Poole Harbour

Postby dpb101 » Sun Mar 14, 2010 10:01 pm

Had a trip out last Sunday with the intent having a poke around the shore line running towards Wareham instead of the usual blast out to sea.
So heading out through Holes Bay:

Over took this chap, who, due to his steam engine, was probably warmer than me!:

On past some modest boats from the local builder:

After going past Poole Quay and turning north into the harbour you follow the shores of Hamworthy. Not quite Sandbanks, but some nice places non the less:

Image

Further up you find Moricorum Quay:

Then the Marines base:

Check out the running gear oin this:

Keep going and you get to Rockley Park:

and its slipway:

Go under the bridge and you find the back end of Turlin Moor an estate of some repute,

Image

But hey, it has a water front!

Some of the Poole fishermen operate from here:

Back under the railway bridge to the main harbour:

At the top of the harbour you find the River Entrance which takes you up to Wareham:

On the way back, a view of Brownsea Island from the North:

and the local oil well:

Carrying on Southwards, past the channel to Poole Quay:

More nicely located houses, this time at Liliput

And the entrance to the Lagoon (can't remember its name) even near a neap high tide it was too shallow to get to:

Image

Round the corner is Parkstone Bay Marina, and it's slip

Image

and it's moorings:

I went for a quick blast out of the harbour, but the easterly wind was bitterly cold so I didn't stay out there long, got all summer for that!

Oh happy memories of The Hard Royal Marines Poole.

Think you have been a bit genorous with your description of Turlin Moor.

Great photos as ever. We're def coming round this summer as we can use some of our free overnights at Cobbs. Looking forward to a cruise up to Wareham and a run round to Lulworth.

Another SB&R cruise?

Great pictures, spent a week at Cobbs quay, first time to the South Coast, had an absolutely fanastic time there, got down there on the 24TH May, came back on the 29 th, weather was really good, bit of a cold wind, got chatting with some local guys on the pontoon at Cobbs quay, and they offered to show us around, followed them on their Sealine 28, went out past the chain ferry, got a bit rough, although my Larson 220 could handle it, the wife didn't so turned around , went for a tour round the back of Brownsea, moored up opposite Green Island, and Furzey Island, then when the tide turned, cut across Wills cut, and then back to Cobbs Quay, I learned so much from those two guys, thanks to Mick(Dolphina), and Stuart, also thanks to all the staff at Cobbs Quay, the manager, Dave, runs a really good marina, everyone was so helpful, going back down in June, 28th, for another week, hopefully explore further.

Sounds like you had a great time. It can get a bit rough getting out past the ferry, but only for a little bit normally. Taking the channel left to Bournemouth often helps smoothing it out quite a bit as well.

Next time a trip to ware ham van be good, be on time before 12 and you can moor up at the waterside pub for some lunch :-) if tide is right you can get with your Larson, mine is a 226 Larson, underneath the bridge and venture further if the sea is too rough.

Christchurch is another nice trip out, and let's not forget lulworth cove nor isle of wight. Mine is similar so it is all doable and I did those with my wive, à three year old and à zeven year old.

Enjoy.

Hi dejongj, had a brilliant time,we did go up as far as the mouth of the River Wareham, then turned back, and came back along channel past Rockley, then the Marines base, last time I was down there was in the late 70's, how that's changed the marines used to have dory's then, nice pieces of kit they've got now, when we go back in June, the guys we met, said that if we fancy it, a trip down to Wareham is on the cards, then a trip to Yarmouth I.O.W, is on the cards, weather permitting, and probably to Lulworth Cove, also recomended Studland bay, bit of micro climate by there, so I was told by the rep for one of the boat dealers in Cobbs quay, while we were there, on one of the windier days, took a drive down to Swanage, to check out the water taxi service, told that they will hook you up to a mooring, and take you onto the beach for a small charge, go for a bite to eat and a shandy, nice open air restaurant not far from the pier, also recomended Worrel Bay, we did drop in at Wareham, not much room to manuovere, and not much space to tie up at the quay, especially when the tour boat is in, saw a few moorings up river, going to check it out on the next trip.
The channel through the chain ferry was a bit rough at the time we went out, but that was more due to the out going tide, and the wind coming the oposite direction, when we went through, there was a Royal Navy diveboat, working in the middle of the channel, don't know what they were doing, but you had to admire the divers in the water, hanging on to what ever it was they were working on, the wife got a bit worried when she saw the fast cat ferry, coming in when we were going out, but it was ok, as he past down the port side of me, and I moved out of the main channel, into the channel, next to the training wall.
Looking forward to going back, we went down to see how our 4x4 would cope with towing the 220, we drive a Ssangyong Rexton, towed it well, apart from the sat nav taking us down some country lanes, at least it made the trip a bit more interesting driving back to sunny Wales  next trip after Poole is the South of France, to Port Grimaud for 2 weeks in August, can't wait, 3rd trip now, 1st time with the Larson, can't wait, already planned some longer outings, Cavalier sur Mer, Pampellone, where I went last year with a couple on their Windy 34 karhman, fantastic day, :D don't remember much of it, too much rose, and cointreau, although I won't be doing that when I'm driving, going to go to Sainte Maxime, and probably Saint Raphael, some nice coves along the way.
Next year though, might do two weeks at Cobbs quay
