shift cut out

Postby betty boop » Mon Mar 21, 2011 11:06 am

this weeks silly question, - what does a shift cut out switch do? I was shifting back n forth on the throttle yesterday watching which bits move to lub etc, noticed the switch wasnt doing much - read through all the info on how to adjust said cut out but still cant find what it is for?

I'm guessing here, but I'd say its to prevent changes of gear under high engine load to stop you destroying the gearbox etc.

(edit) changed my mind on this, see my post below if interested.

I'm sure I read somewhere recently that this cuts the ignition briefly during changes from forward to reverse to take strain off the gearbox. I might have been dreaming though

Nope your both correct, it temporarily cuts ignition to allow easier shifts in to gear

I always thought that it was there to prevent you starting the engine unless it was in neutral, or am I thinking of a different switch?
I have been caught out when someone has accidentally knocked the throttle into gear and disabled the starter, making me think I had a more serious problem.

interesting answers, in this case and part of the reason I wondered in the first place - is that the switchs trip mechanicsm doesnt appear to move when enguage forward or reverse, at least it didnt when the engines off, may be that changes when 'running'?

If it cuts out he ignition on shift change - wouldnt it be a noticable cutout of the tick over? or are we talking micro seconds cutout?

there is an adjustment squence in the service manual may be I need to get my head round that sometime soon

I'm sure its only to stop in gear starting.

No its not, that's done by the throttle lever, the switch on the engine is only struck when changing in to gear and then released, go press it in while the engine is running and it should in theory stop

Ok I've had my controls in bits and mine at least don't have that. It only has in-gear start inhibit.
