Poole.................

Postby dpb101 » Tue Apr 26, 2011 9:45 pm

Have decided to take a berth at Cobbs for the week as I am off and if I were to launch more than three days in the week then its cheaper as the slip is included in the weekly rate!
Wasn't sure about the conditions with the wind getting up put being offshore it was fine.
So apart from dolphins which seem to have taken up at least a temporary residency in the area:

The forces were out in force, both on the water:

and above it:

The RNLI were playing with their hovercraft:

and a tall ship was in port:

Finally, new lights at Poole Bridge:

They are a little confusing at first as the three reds show all the time the bridge is down, unlike the old system where the lights were only switched on when the bridge was about to raise.
The single orange light above the reds tells you yo can proceed if the bridge is down.
If no orange light, just the reds, then you have to stop, usually whilst the bridge is being lifted.
You can then proceed when the three green lights come on.
Siimples...............

Oh, and I caught four whiting on feathers....which were very nice for my tea!!

Its worth noting that the orange above the reds looks very similar to a red. I had to check with PHC via the radio and then pointed out to them that in the sunlight it is very difficult to distinguish the colours and that I had to resort to counting the lights.

Great pictures dpb.

The Dolphins are a worry though. With the amount of Dolphins appearing around our coastline, the numbers of breeding pairs are increasing. They are superb animals, however the consequences of their beauty and presence is that they eat approx 20kgs of fish per day each, maybe that's why Matt and I can't catch anything, even though you managed a few Whiting, well done.

In their own environment, fish life is plentiful, in the UK we are struggling with fish stocks. I'm hoping that in a few years time, if they increase in numbers by too many, environmentalists aren't going to suggest culls. :(

i questioned the very same thing and was told in no uncertain terms to contact poole bridge control
when you can keep your head when all those around are losing theirs, you obviously haven't grasped the seriousness of the situation
