Winter all over cover going on- Must be getting colder.

Postby salamis » Wed Oct 26, 2011 11:48 pm

Heading off down to the boat on Friday with my brother to hopefully have a run out if its not to wet and windy.
On return plan is flush through then anti freeze (again). Put boat back into rack for fitting winter cover and tube heaters. I recon a good 2 hours work after we get back in, maybe less as there wIll be two of us.

Upper Lough Erne in flood, about 1.6m up on "summer" levels, so no boating,

static jetties below the water

I winterised last Saturday, cleared the boat out, topped off the fuel and flushed through etc etc! I hate this time of year, still some nice days but frost means anti freeze after every run!

Hope you manage to get out Robbie.

Just out of interest but my soon to be new boat has a tonneu cover and a camper cover. Which cover is better to put on over the winter? Would the camper cover allow the boat to breathe more so reducing any mold/mildew. I know the tonneau would add more protection from the elements but would if not allow the boat to breathe as well?

We put the all over covers on, remove the seat cushions and carpets and empty the lockers so that there is less to absorb the damp. A few damp absorbers spread about seem to keep the boat dry.

We've accepted that the season is done so service and winterise next week or so.

Might start emptying the boat this weekend.

Ive still got a 3 hour (maybe longer) trip by sea to get my new boat back to Saxon Wharf in the next week or two, just need a calm day but its all looking a bit wet and windy at the moment!

Where is the boat coming from Matt, we look forward to having a nose around when you arrive.

I normally have the tonneau cover on most of the time but once I accept that the season is over I fit the camper covers. It is then more protected for carrying out any jobs that need doing over the winter.
Saxon don't like launching Jorida with the camper covers on as the roof line is that little bit higher and the clearance in the rack is very small, not worth the risk of having the frame accidentally removed.

Speaking of which, is your cover sorted now?

prefer the camper cover as i think it brings some heat into the cockpit area.
Have removed a few bits but as plan on boating all year can not see point in it all coming out and then bringing back each time.

The Tube heaters went in boat last weekend. just to keep the damp at bay. water tank drained and fuel topped up. 300 litres !!!! ouch

We have to buy a metered lead from MDL at around £85 then just pay for the electicity used. Presumably you can sell the lead on or back to MDL if you leave.

Thats the beauty of tube heaters at only 60 or 100 Watts.
The same as putting a couple of lightbulbs on when it gets cold.
No small easily handled electronic thermostat for me though oh no I have definately gone for the big engineered over the top vesion.

Component parts laid out on a bit of wood. Thermostat is on the far left, juction box in the middle, and on the right an external waterproof socket

Wired up and works a treat, juction box now full of wires and mastic

I have my tube heaters mounted on base boards to keep them from falling over ( 2 of my "many" ) )
