AIS - well sort of!

For those of us with smart phones, have you seen the iAIS app?. let's you report your position to the marine traffic website ( OK, so not real AIS).

When you use the Marine Traffic website you can group your favourite boats, therefore we could see where everyone is.

I think there is an iPad version as well.

Seems to work OK, for example, look who's been moored up off Bournemouth all night!

I wonder if it shows on a ships AIS plotter, unlikely I suppose because the App will only be linked to the private website, but you never know. If it does then you wouldn't need to buy an AIS tranponder.
