Is winter over?

Postby salamis » Mon Feb 27, 2012 10:16 am

Popped down to the boat on Saturday mainly to refit the batteries and replace the broken off terminal plus take off winter cover and put the tonnau cover back on. I have left the tube heaters insitue just incase and thought I might just have a quick run out but saddly ran out of time and the first run out this year will have to wait.

We popped down yesterday, to check things over and collect life jackets to take home for inflation test.
No batteries installed yet.
How grubby these boats get even under the canopies, damn good clean needed.
Checked electricity, seemed OK, timer had lost an hour and a half in 4 weeks, so some power cuts I suspect.
Temperature in the engine bay had been down to -1.4°C so the frost thermostat is not working correctly, -4.3°C in the cabin so the heater has been operating. I think a new plug in thermostat is called for.
Does anyone have any recommendations? I have seen a device called Timeguard ET05 advertised which looks the part, does anyone use these?

Will the mild weather last, or will the Great Weather Gods send us a cold snap the week after we take the heaters out?

i have these fitted and seem to work well. 1 in engine bay and 1 in cabin.

Left mine in last year and was surprised how hot the engine bay got on 1 of the few sunny days. 48C :o

There is a wholesalers just over the bridge that sells them at very reasonable rates

JP do not rush off to buy one. I've got a spare one at home if you want to negotiate for it :D :D :D

Before the Cap'n says anything, yes it's in the garage (bit of a private joke)

I used one of these all winter JP and it worked well lowest temp in engine bay all winter recorded at 1.4 degrees. It is recommended to set it to a degree or more than you would normally as I have read they can pick up some heat from the device itself. Don't know if true or not. I set mine to come on at 4 degrees so may well be true.

As alot of people, we went to have a looksee and check everything is in good order with our boat, bit wet inside and lots of lovely mould and algae on my cover and some underneath... nothing that wont come off though with a good clean. Taken out the seats that I can to get them to dry out a bit (in hindsight I should have thrown them in the loft with my other gear but still....)
Counting down the weeks now until Im brave enough to dip my big toe in again....I think wed take it out a bit earlier if I didnt have to get soaking to launch....a trip up to windermere might be on the cards in a few weeks I think.
