Ive just made & installed a Rain Seepage Prevention Device..

I'm surprised. I'm sure when we bought our boat Saxon was quite a bit less than Hamble Point. Could be wrong though. I might ask when I'm down there tomorrow for the boat show. Being on their rack would get us nearer the open water but give us a slightly longer drive to the boat.

However, I'm looking forward to being up the Itchen rather than Hamble this year as I quite like the trip down to the Solent from up there as there are lots of things to see on the way down to the open sea etc... You've all scared me to death about the rust heap though- and I'll be even closer to it than you Saxon guys! Are the deposits really that bad? Fortunately we are on the bottom rack so we may be sheltered a bit.

My boat does get pretty dirty at times and im on the bottom rack, my tonneau cover looked filthy from dust after only a week or two, although when I popped down yesterday it looked a lot cleaner due to all the rain washing it off. Are you outside at SDS I know they have an undercover section but I presume its more pricey to keep it there?

Hi Matt, I think I am outside as I didn't specify being inside when I signed up with them. I'm having the hull machine polished next Monday, I hope with all the rust in the atmosphere that it's not going to be like polishing a t*rd!

It's more of a niggle for me but I'm quite high up on top of the rack. A good hose down usually does the trick. Just had an email from MDL, fees at Hamble Point would be 150% of those at Saxon.

We quite like the slow trundle back up the Itchen at the end of the day, chance to break out a bottle of beer and it gives the boat a flush in less salty water.

Definately going to have to organise an Itchen get together, there's loads of us now.

Ok, I just need to work on my 3 year projections, which I will pluck out of thin air. I'd rather get Theo on board though as I believe he has a yacht so he might let me have a go driving it. I had a year at SDS before Saxon opened (built) its racks. You are closer to the pile of scrap but you are also due west of it so the prevailing winds tend to keep the debris away from you. I didn't notice it particularly when I was there. You don't escape scot free as it is such a big mountain of rubbish that it causes its own eddies in the wind. They should be spraying the pile, especially when they are moving it or loading a ship, perhaps you can keep an eye out when you are passing by, they are known to be a bit lax on procedures.

We've just moved from MDL Hamble Point to SDS on the Itchen. I don't think the MDL Hamble Point prices are any more expensive than MDL at Saxon Wharf?

My research two or three years ago suggested that Hamble was quite a bit more than Saxon, and the further east you go, Brighton & Eastbourne for instance the cheaper it gets, along the south coast anyway.
Also SDS was slightly more expensive than Saxon, Saxon should be cheaper as it is predominantly a boat yard with a bit of drystacking in one corner, not a marina like Shamrock nor dedicated drystacking like SDS.

I think you are correct to say that still Paul as Littlehampton is quite a bit cheaper but you need a trailer, and Brighton is substantially less to berth your boat than any marina in the Solent area and the main reason is the lack of destinations you can set off to on a day’s cruising.
I was at Littlehampton in all for around 14 years with various boats as it was a much shorter drive down to the boat from home 45miles not the 86 mile drive to Southampton. However from Littlehampton you can only really cruise to Brighton or Shoreham with no fuel at Shoreham that often meant carrying on to Brighton anyway and you can only do that journey so many times before it gets a bit samey. From Eastbourne it seems to get worse with even less destinations to visit.
The beauty of boating from Southampton is the vast number of places open to the boat explorer plus most have a fuel pontoon available.
Despite my tongue in cheek 'Peter Kay' stand-up reference to the Itchen, it really is a great place to start a day’s boating from a tad expensive but great.
Matt I have put a couple of innovative bits on Avalon one of which holds the bimini iron work off the gel coat when lowered plus a natty bit of Velcro that stops the framework side bar hitting me on the head when lifting the framework up. All these things help to make your boat more personal to you however not all my good ideas have been as successful as yours. Like the time I thought that I could fill plastic milk bottles with water with the lids screwed back on and hang them off a tarpaulin stretched over the boat, what I failed to realise was the side facing the sun had bottles which swelled up due to the water expanding, then the bottles burst letting the water out so all the full water bottles on the far side pulled the tarpaulin off.

Robbie, as we are going slightly off tangent I thought it would be appropriate at this time to gloat as I remember you saying you were a Spurs fan, I am a QPR season ticket holder and a very happy chappy tonight!

You have every reason to be pleased Matt, QPR even had their goal scorer sent off and we still couldn't put the ball in the net and worst still we have dropped to fifth place with Chelsea biting at our ankles.
It is never an easy ride being a Spurs supporter but someone has to.
