interior vinyl Repair/protection cleaning question

Postby Gazjen » Wed Apr 25, 2012 9:58 pm

Hoping someone can help with this

I have a very small hole in one of my seat cushions on the rear bench of my boat its only around 3mm x 5mm is there anything I can do to contain it? I did think about patching it from the inside but is there another option?

Also can anyone recommend a good cleaner for the seats? I used Mr Muscle on the last boat and then autoglm vinyl and rubber care but I'm not sure if that contributed to them prematurely cracking or if it was the bad winter we had

Thanks

I used to run a similar business to Chips Away and we could repair vinyl and leather. It was like a glue which you sprayed with an activator to go off, then recolour the section. I can't do it now but certainly, someone like chips away would repair it invisibly. To stop it spreading, try superglue.

Regarding vinyl cleaning, definitely recommend Starbrite vinyl cleaner, it is brilliant but expensive and leaves it feeling soft and nourished too, whereas Mr Muscle will probably dry out and deteriorate the fabric over time. That Starbrite cleaner is amazing though but quite hard work if you're a lazy unfit bloke like me

303 Products do a vinyl cleaner and also Aerospace Protectant that looks after it afterwards. The protectant is great stuff and can be used all around the boat (or your car) - it will bring the dashboard, rubber items, switchgear etc back to looking like new.

Whatever you use, DON'T use anything that contains 'petroleum distilates' on your vinyl. Avoid any product that lists it on the ingredients as it will suck out all the plasticisers from the vinyl, making it go dry and brittle.

Capt'n Jack's 'Magic Sponges' are very good at getting ingrained grime off vinyl too but they do have an abrasive action and will probably also take some life out of the vinyl. I tried them on my sunpad and it changed colour!

hiya

you can buy a vinyl repair kit on ebay, I have one and yes it works but with mixed results.

I have often used dettol mould and mildew spray for vinyl cleaning, it does a pretty good job
but if you get in carpets you will probably bleach them.
