Pop-up cleats

Postby mlines » Sun Jun 10, 2012 3:59 pm

The cleats on our boat were beginning to look a bit rough. Whilst they look ok on the front....
Image
The underside is beginning to look corroded.
Image
Therefore we purchased some stainless steel "Pop-up" Cleats from Baseline Marine Products. Now, as these are going to require some heavy duty cutting of the boat, I made up a 1:1 template of the holes needed and printing them on self adhesive label. This meant I can stick them to both some cardboard so that I can check the holes are correct and also to the boat itself for the actual cutting. The picture below shows the template. In fact, I adjust this slightly to include centre markings in the drill holes, but this is not shown in this early test template.

I then used some sharp drills and hole cutters to drill out the template that I had stuck to the boat. Here is the cut out version before the holes had been cleaned and sealed. I put sealant in so that water would not leech into the laminate layers after the cleats had been fitted. Note also that Bayliner where not particularly accurate with the alginment of the old cleats with respect to the wooden blocks laminated into the hull. Therefore I had to adjust the positioning of the cleats so the mounting bolts hit the wooden strengther rather than just the fibreglass hull (You can see by the old holes/marks on the picture below the mis-alignment).

And after sealing and tightening the nuts, stand back and admire your work!

Nice one, we have pop ups but usually forget to pop them down

They do look a lot nicer though don't they.

What are you doing with your old ones? :)

How much (if you don't mind me asking) did the pop up ones cost you per pair?

tnx

The old ones are on my garage floor, if you want them then you can have them for the cost of P+P

The pop up cleats are from Baseline http://www.baselinemarine.com/shopdispl ... asp?page=5

although quite what has happened to their pricing is a complete mystery as I paid £35 each for them, I can see similar ones on Ebay for around £25 and also some similar ones on Ebay USA which also have drain boots fitted which I would have been interested in.

Very smart Martin
We have pop ups on the stern but not on the bow or midships for some reason. I have often thought I would like to replace the non pop ups with a bigger cleat, especially midships as I often bring both bow and stern lines to this as a double spring and it doesn't really fit.
Having seen your work I might be tempted to undertake some minor surgery. :)

Paul, the only reasons I can think of for non pop ups amidships and at the bows could either be cost.......unlikely with Larsons, or convenience and ease of use......more than likely. The design of your boat may have lead them to believe it would be more difficult to lift pop up cleats in the for'ard areas.

It probably could be the worry of water ingress into the cabin area from moving parts and water seals.
Only a thought but having then in an area that drains into the bilge rather than nice fitted carpet might decide the choice.

I might have misled you Cap'n, I don't want pop-ups on the midships, just bigger fixed cleats and the fixing holes will be at greater centres therefore the minor surgery requirement. Forward cleats are over the anchor locker so not an issue with leaking but midships could be, I will have to investigate the underside, probabaly behind the headlining somewhere. :(
Probably a job for the winter now
