Brunswick Closes Another Plant

BrunsickThe massive American leisure, boat and outboard conglomerate has just announced yet another 'consolidation' and the closure of yet another boat building plant.

In a recent announcement Brunswick spikesman Dan Kubera says it will combine production of its Hatteras and Cabo boats at the Hattaras plant in New Bern, North Carolina and will close the existing California facility producing Carbo yachts by the end of this year.

Hatteras president James R. Meyer said in a statement, "Bringing our brands under one physical roof will allow us to fully leverage our technological and operational advantages, better serve our dealers and customers, reduce fixed costs and more effectively use our available manufacturing capacity."

As Cabo and Hattaras already share engineering, marketing, and sales services at New Bern the announcement is not unexpected. Although some 40 jobs will be lost in the move Brunswick says that some managers and key production workers will be offered positions and help in relocating to New Bern. The Hatteras plant, which has seen its workforce slashed from 1,400 to just 280 since the recession hit, builds motor yachts from 50-100ft whilst Cabo builds sportsfishers from 32-52ft.
